12/21/11-mythology

Mythology is the study of myths or a collection of myths such as the Greek gods. Mythology is important because sometimes it serves as moral stories for people. Mythology is used in everyday life by some scholars who are experts in it and mythology serves as a good topic for books and movies.

12/19/11-occupy Maine

I believe that they have gone to far because they have been camping out there for almost or about three months. And for about the past month they have apparently doing nothing, so I don't think that they should keep staying at the park if they are not doing much.

12/15/11- an occurence at owl creek

In the story some examples of foreshadowing that the man has been killed is that near the end he had seemed to ran all the way to his wife, but that is impossible because he said that they live very far away and it then shows that he was only thinking this as he was being hung under the bridge. All of the story of him escaping was a fantasy or thought. When the rope broke that was inferred as the snapping of his neck as he was killed by the rope. And him sinking into the water was him slowly fading away or dying.

I believe we should follow through with this proposal because it could provide a lot of energy for homes in Maine. It also would does not interfere with the view of beach houses or any other thing.

I believe that the Khemer Rouge will keep Pran working in fields or farms for a period of time, but then they will murder him because he is a reporter and works for the government. Pran might try and figure out a way to get away, but I think that is probably most unlikely.

12/5/11-ocupy

I believe at the moment that it can be considered an eyesore because they are not even protesting at the moment and have done nothing in about 6 weeks except sleep in tents at the park. Because of this no one is paying attention to them.

12/1/11-winter activity

My favorite winter activity is sledding because I enjoy going fast down hills, and hanging out with friends while doing so. I enjoy it more than others because I can be outside and hang with friends while I do it.

11/29/11- my life

My life could best be described as exciting because I am in many clubs and am always out and exploring the town with my friends.  I am rarely stuck inside doing nothing and I am always active in trying new things, that's why I believe my life could be described as exciting. I would change the word to unique because I have a pretty strange array of friends and activities I do.

11/22/11-monkeys paw

In this story a family consisting of a old husband and wife and son are all living in a house when a old friend of the husband gives him a supposively magic mummified monkey paw. The man tells him to be careful for what he wishes. The husband wishes for 200 pounds for his first wish, as he does his son goes to work. Later a man tells them his son is dead and as a compensation. Later the husbands wife goes crazy and wants to wish back their son to life, the husband ends up doing so and the son comes back to life and knocks on the door. In a frantic try to stop his '"son" from getting into the house before his wife opens the door he uses his third wish the make his son dead again.

11/18/11- culture shock

I believe what the article is saying is good because it covers most of the basics of culture shock.  It lists the possible symptoms and solutions of cultural shock and I find this very useful. It also tries to comfort the reader or person in culture shock. That is why the advice in this article is helpful and useful.

Yes I do believe the law needs to be changed because if it is not change instances like these could occur again until it is stopped. We should change the law that the head of the college decides what happens to a criminal in their area or come up with a new solution or method.

One aspect of American culture that has been difficult for Firoozeh to adapt to is the fact that in American culture people have short easy to pronounce names. This was difficult for Firoozeh because her name was very different so people did not want to become friends with her, or even later in her life give her a job after she was out of college.

Genocide is the deliberate and systematic destruction in whole or in part of an ethnic, racial, religious, or national group. A example of genocide from history is the Holocaust during WW2 in which the Germans tried to exterminate the Jewish population.

11/1/11 selfish giant

This short story is about a selfish giant who has a magnificent garden that kids like to play in. But because he is selfish he builds a giant wall to keep them out of his garden. Over time his garden seems to stay in winter weather because his flowers and trees feel bad for the children. But one day the children somehow get back into the garden and the plants blossom once again and the giant loses his selfishness. He encounters one particular child that brings him great joy but over time he never sees him again until he gets older. The boy comes back with holes on his hand and feet and tells the giant to come to his garden of paradise and the giant is found dead the next day under a tree. This implies that the boy is Jesus Christ and brought the giant to heaven because it was his time.

10/28/11 behavior

Some situations in which I have had to adjust my behavior is at professional concerts in which I have had to stay quiet and be respectful and try not to talk to my peers. I had to change my behavior in this situation because it would be disrespectful to not do so.

10/26/11 renovating the civic center

After reading this article my view on this topic did change to that we should reject this renovation. I have decided to reject it now because in this article the writer has provided mass amounts of evidence that shows that the renovation is a bad idea. One example is that apperently instead of 33 million dollars payback it would actually be 55 million, and based on many other pieces of evidence it doesn't seem that it is worth the money to renovate it.

I do believe we can still let children handle firearms, just as long as they know how to handle and use the weapon. If they do not know how to do so then I think they shouldn't.

My favorite season is fall because I enjoy the nice foliage and cool crisp air that fall brings. I also enjoy fall because I like the holidays in fall such as Halloween and Thanksgiving. Lastly I like fall because of the sports in fall like cross country, and basketball.

This story is about a small village in which they host a lottery the person who wins the lottery is to be stoned to death for good crops in the summer. The time period seems to be maybe in the 1600's or the 1800's or even in today's time.

Culture in Grover's corner influences personal belief and behavior similar to the way it does in south portland because education in both of them has influenced people to either go further in education or get married right after being done with education.

I disagree with this statement because I feel you should be fully educated and have a job before you even get into a marriage and I feel that education is more important in the long run.

I agree with Obama's thoughts on creating jobs because they provide work and repair important things at the same time. Doing this could be a pretty good method of building up our economy but I believe that there is most likely other greater possibilities to raise our economy.

I would vote for question 1 because as shown 59% of the population of Biddeford wants the racino to be built and it would provide jobs as well. Although all together I would like it better if there was no gambling at all.

One aspect of culture that impacts the daily life of Grover's corner is that once most people graduate from high school they feel they are ready to become married and stay in the town. As a result most of the towns people are wedded young and stay inside the town, making it only a few families in the town because they do not leave. This aspect of culture does not impact the culture of most in south portland because most kids go off to college now before getting married and few stay in their home towns.

9/29/11 culture of grovers corner

The culture of Grover's Corners consists of most people staying in the town their whole life, going to school, when getting married you don't see the bride or groom. The culture also is very quiet and normal living.

9/27/11 Fireworks

I feel that cities do have the right to ban fireworks even though the state says they are legal because I like the idea of little cities almost as if they are their own little state following the rules of the big picture, but still having their own.

9/23/11 aspect of culture

One aspect of my culture that directly influences my personal belief and behavior is that fact that in my culture sports take up most of my time. Due to this I am more physically fit, and I eat more then when I don't play sports. It also makes me more determined and confident in life.

If I were to make a time capsule to put in the cornerstone of the new school I would include a recent magazine, such as sports illustrated or the newspaper. I would also include some technology or toys of our time like cellphones.

9/19/11 -boy doesn't meet girl

I believe single gender implements is something that we could implement into the high school because as said in the article it could help certain kids learn and focus more in class. Also it could help build kids socially as well as intellectually so this idea should be considered. But I don't know how well it would work at this late of an age because the studies were conducted on younger grades such as elementary schools.

9/15/11 civic center renovation

I believe that renovating the civic center is a good idea because it could possibly help bring in more people and profit because at the moment not much is done with the civic center except for hockey games. And it would be nice for more events to be held there.

9/13/11 - American culture

I found only one thing surprising in American culture and etiquette.  I thought it surprising that it was recommended to leave a little bit of food on your plate because I thought it was the exact oppisite. This was the only thing I found surprising in American culture.

my culture

the culture of Kevan Merrow consists of eating lots of pizza, drinking milk and sleeping.  Family traditions include Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Easter.  Although my culture is based off catholic religion I do not practice the religion. And lastly playing videogames is essential to my culture.

Summer reading book

The book I read this summer was titled Kite Runner, the book was about the life of Amir a boy always struggling to get his father's approval  and who lives in the Middle East. Throughout the book Amir struggles through war, friendships, and life itself. I found the book to be very entertaining and a interesting read. I don't recommend this book to too many people because it it quite long and complicated in different ways other then big vocabulary.
